Putting new flooring in one room or throughout your Barrie, ON home is an exciting time, but you could be disappointed if your only criterion is the visual appeal when deciding which type of flooring to use. There are more things to consider when choosing flooring that will ensure you are as happy with your choice years from now as you were when you stood in the flooring showroom.
Steps to Choosing the Right Flooring
One of the most important factors when choosing flooring is your family’s lifestyle. If you have children, pets or an elderly or disabled family member, you will want to choose flooring that can stand up to vigorous wear and “accidents” that can occur. Carpeting and even tile may not be your best choices in these instances. Carpeting is more difficult to keep clean, and tile is hard, cold and unforgiving, and the grout lines can be challenging to those with a wheelchair or walker. If you have anyone with allergies or other respiratory conditions, also consider how the flooring is manufactured, as some materials can bother those with sensitivities.

Another consideration is the room that will be getting new flooring. Rooms, such as laundry, kitchen and bath need a flooring option that can handle water. The entry way and hallways need flooring that holds up to heavier traffic. The entry way is where most dirt is tracked in, so a flooring choice that can handle that is preferable.

FlooringFinally, consider what maintenance is necessary for the various flooring choices. Carpeting will need cleaning at least once per year to maintain the manufacturer warranty in most cases. Wood and laminate hold up best if water, dirt and dust are removed promptly. Other surfaces have specific needs, as well. Be sure to ask these types of questions when you are looking at flooring.
